FAQ

What is a ‘free tour’?

‘Free’ walking tours started in Berlin in 2004 and has now spread to over 40 cities around the world. We offer non-traditional tours to everyone from backpackers to billionaires! We work on a tips-only basis, ensuring the quality of your tour. This means everyone can enjoy Queenstown as much as we do, whatever your budget, allowing you to decide the real value of the experience. You name the price.

How is it free?

The answer is simple: because the informed, entertaining, and unforgettable guides on our Free Tours work on a tips-only basis, the highest quality is guaranteed! They’ll never pressure you to tip – even though the guides receive no other compensation from our company or the town we work in. We believe that if money is given, it should be voluntary and in direct proportion to the quality of the tour and the budget of the traveller. Value for money goes a long way, and satisfied customers tip what they think the tour was worth!

Where does Free Walking Tours Queenstown start?

The tour starts from the Fallen Soldiers Memorial Archway on Marine Parade – right down at the waterfront. Your guide will be waiting to meet you at the start point in a bright yellow “Free Walking Tours Queenstown” T-shirt.

When does the tour start?

We run two tours every day – at 10am and 2pm. Please try and arrive a few minutes early to make sure you have time to find your local guide in our yellow t-shirt.

How long is the Tour?

The entire walk covers about three kilometres through downtown Queenstown. Our tours run from 2 – 2 ½ hours, depending on the group. This includes a couple of short stops for a snack, and a refreshing beer sample at the end!
